Earlier today, there was bad news for Newcastle, Tottenham and Liverpool as SC Freiburg announced the signing of Matthias Ginter.

Despite interest from the Premier League trio, the 28-year-old decided to return to where it all started, having spent nine years at SC Freiburg before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2014.

What’s the story?

Well, it was Inter Live who claimed that Newcastle were keen to bring Ginter to the Premier League.

Elsewhere, Calciomercato revealed that Tottenham were interested in signing the Germany international, while it was FC Inter News who said Liverpool were considering a move.

Now, the Premier League trio have officially missed out.

As per SC Freiburg’s announcement, the details of Ginter’s contract will not be revealed, following a nondisclosure agreement with the defender.

West Ham were also said to be interested in signing the centre-back, while Arsenal held talks over a potential free transfer.

Furthermore, Aston Villa were monitoring the situation, as the man likened to Sergio Ramos was set to become a free agent in June.

Now, none of the aforementioned English clubs can sign Ginter – not anytime soon, at least.

Newcastle, Tottenham & Liverpool missed out on a bargain

In our view, the Premier League trio – as well as West Ham, Aston Villa and Arsenal – missed out on a bargain.

A player of Ginter’s experience does not usually come cheap, so for him to be available on a free transfer represented a fantastic market opportunity.

The towering defender has won 46 caps for Germany, lifting the World Cup along the way, while he has also won the DFB-Pokal as well as the German Super Cup.

Throughout his career, Ginter has racked up 425 appearances, which is an astonishing amount for a 28-year-old.

Clearly, the German has bundles of experience, and also plenty of time on his side to achieve even more in his footballing career.

To put it simply, Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte and Jürgen Klopp will surely be frustrated to miss out on the signing of Ginter.
