According to Inter Live, Newcastle and Bayern Munich are battling to sign Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter.

What’s the story?

Well, Inter Live believe a number of big clubs are interested in the 27-year-old, including Inter Milan, although Newcastle and Bayern Munich are the most serious.

It is even said that Newcastle – thanks to the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF) – have the finances to tempt Ginter.

The Magpies are currently languishing 19th in the Premier League, so it speaks volumes that they’re able to compete with a club of Bayern Munich’s size in the market.

Recently, Borussia Monchengladbach announced that Ginter would be leaving the club in June when his contract expires.

In that respect, he is surely available for a cut-price fee this month.

The Bundesliga outfit can either recoup some cash for the 46-cap Germany international, or lose him for nothing in June.

Inter Live believe Bayern Munich will submit an offer soon.

Should Newcastle sign Matthias Ginter?

In our view, this would be an excellent signing.

Despite PIF’s riches, it seems Newcastle are trying to be relatively smart in the market instead of throwing money at players.

The £12m deal for Kieran Trippier is an example of that, and if Eddie Howe can sign an experienced international in Ginter for a cut-price fee, it would be an excellent start to the January transfer window.

Interestingly, The Telegraph believe Newcastle want to sign two new centre-backs, so a move for Ginter wouldn’t be a surprise.

As things stand, Howe has Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez, Ciaran Clark and Paul Dummett to choose from.

They’re all committed professionals, although there isn’t much quality there, so it makes sense for the Magpies to target two new options.

Keep an eye on this saga – in our view, this could hot up once the signing of Trippier is confirmed.
