Mattias Ginter has been dropped from the Borussia Monchengladbach side after the reported Tottenham, Liverpool and Newcastle United target rejected a new contract, as reported by Buli News.

In the space of 24 hours in late-December, one of the Bundesliga’s most historic clubs confirmed that not one but two of their star players would be leaving Borussia Park in 2022.

Happy New Year indeed.

Mattias Ginter, like long-standing team-mate Denis Zakaria, will be a free-agent next summer. And at the age of 27, and having blossomed into one of the finest defenders in Germany since joining from league rivals Dortmund, Ginter has more suitors than a supermodel with a Tinder subscription.

Serie A champions Inter Milan are the current favourites.

But, according to InterLive, the riches on offer at Newcastle could lure the 2014 World Cup winner to St James’ Park instead.

Calciomercato believe that Tottenham are also keen.

So too are Liverpool. A move to Anfield will see Ginter reunite with his former Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp (FC Inter News).

Wherever he ends up, it’s clear to see that Gladbach coach Adi Hutter is wasting no time as he looks to move on from an emotional break-up.

It remains to be seen whether Marvin Friedrich, Ginter’s successor, is long-term partner material or merely a hopeful rebound.

Where will Matthias Ginter go next?

“The decision was made for Marvin Friedrich to play,” Hutter explains.

Friedrich, a January signing from Union Berlin, made his Gladbach debut during this weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen as Ginter watched on from the bench.

It certainly wasn’t an ideal start to life with Die Fohlen. Friedrich gave away a penalty in the second half.

But at least Hutter knows that he can plan for next season with Friedrich at his disposal. That is more than can be said for Ginter.

“We made the decision quickly. We were happy to be able to complete this transfer,” the former Eintracht Frankfurt coach adds. “(Friedrich) is a player who will be a part of this team in the future.”

If Friedrich is the future, then Ginter is quickly looking like the past.
