Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has responded to reports that European champions Real Madrid are keen on signing him.

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur have had a busy summer as the Lilywhites aim to break into the Champions League spots next season after just missing out on the top four to Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.

Spurs have signed Leeds United’s Archie Gray and Swedish attacking midfielder Lucas Bergvall with a new forward potentially the next name on the list.

HITC has reported that Spurs are keen on Federico Chiesa with the Juventus winger set to hold talks with the club about his future.

However, there was some unwanted transfer interest earlier this summer.

Cristian Romero responds to Real Madrid’s interest

Back in June, there was reports that Tottenham defender Cristiano Romero was attracting interest from Real Madrid after a brilliant spell in England.

Since moving to the Premier League, Romero has been one of the Premier League’s best defenders with Lisandro Martinez hailing the Spurs ace as ‘one of the best in the world’.

A post on X from ESPN Argentina states that Madrid are sniffing around the Argentine defender and have already asked about the availability of the 25-year-old.

Now, speaking to ESPN Argentina, the former Atalanta defender was asked about his future at North London and was unequivocal in his response.

“I respect Tottenham a lot,” Romero said. “They always give me a lot of love here, so I like to play here. I don’t think about other clubs or possibilities, even if I know there have been rumors about a possible transfer, I’m calm.”

Romero has to stay for Tottenham’s project to succeed

It is clear that Postecoglou is building an exciting and promising team at Spurs with Mikey Moore potentially the frontman for Spurs.

Whilst this is seemingly an exciting time for Spurs, the prospect of losing Romero is a daunting one for the club.

His performances for the Lilywhites have been exemplary since his move to North London and if Real Madrid did come in for him, Spurs have to do all they can to hold onto the defender.

With Real Madrid missing out on Leny Yoro, who joined Manchester United, a new centre-back may well be high on their agenda whether it’s this summer or next.
