Tottenham Hotspur surely need to sign a striker this summer and one player is being talked about in a similar bracket to Harry Kane.
We are now almost a year removed from Harry Kane’s departure.
Tottenham Hotspur lost their star striker to Bayern Munich last summer and haven’t really signed a direct replacement.
Tottenham instead invested in a versatile forward, snapping up Brennan Johnson in a £47.5million deal from Nottingham Forest.
Timo Werner then arrived in January but was mostly deployed down the left flank.
The German is back for another loan spell from RB Leipzig, but it’s unlikely that he will suddenly be used as a striker under Ange Postecoglou.
The time has surely come for Tottenham to invest in a new goalscorer – and they may yet shop at RB Leipzig again.
Tottenham Hotspur target in Harry Kane’s bracket
Reports in December suggested that Tottenham had been targeting RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda.
A deal would have allegedly set Tottenham back around £75million in January with RB Leipzig in no mood to sell.
Werner ended up signing just weeks later Openda suggested that his teammate had joined a ‘good team’ in Spurs.
Openda remains on the wish list; Sky Sports claimed in July that Tottenham have the Belgian on their wish list.
It’s no surprise as Openda smashed 28 goals in 44 appearances following a move from RC Lens last summer.
Hailed as ‘super-fast’ by Rangers boss Philippe Clement, Openda has been a constant menace to defenders in the last few years.
That skillset will surely appeal to Ange Postecoglou and Openda has now received praise in Germany.
Kicker have now ranked Openda as one of the top four strikers in the Bundesliga.
They consider Openda to be in the same bracket as teammate Benjamin Sesko, Borussia Dortmund’s new signing Serhou Guirassy and former Tottenham hero Kane.
Kicker feel that all four are short of being world class forwards but are in the next tier down, highlighting that Openda’s pace and clinical finishing make him a ‘great hope’ for RB Leipzig.
“He followed up his first eleven goals with 13 goals in the second half of the year. The Belgian has established himself in the Bundesliga straight away with his quick and assertive approach and is a great hope for the future at fourth-place Leipzig,” they wrote.
Tottenham may well look to that ‘great hope’ away from RB Leipzig and lure him to North London.
Seeing Openda ranked up there with Kane just goes to show the kind of impact he has been making in Germany.
Yet whilst Kane is now 31, Openda doesn’t even turn 25 until February 2025.
Tottenham could sign their striker for present and the future in Openda – but will have to come up with a big offer to tempt RB Leipzig into a deal.
