RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda has praised Tottenham Hotspur having completed a move to sign teammate Timo Werner on Tuesday.
Tottenham were in the market for an attacking player when the January window opened and they haven’t wasted any time.
Timo Werner became Tottenham’s first-choice target and Spurs have now completed a loan deal until the end of the season.
HITC Football understands that Tottenham will be able to turn the loan move permanent for around £15.5million at the end of the campaign.
The former Chelsea striker slipped down the RB Leipzig pecking order and is now looking to get out and play games again ahead of Euro 2024.
Lois Openda praises Tottenham amid Timo Werner move
One of the strikers to impact Werner’s playing time is Lois Openda.
The Belgian hitman joined RB Leipzig from Lens over the summer and has immediately become the first-choice striker.
Openda has now told Bild that he thinks Tottenham are a ‘good team’ and predicts that Werner will succeed in North London.
Werner said goodbye to RB Leipzig and has now secured his move with Openda stating that the squad have wished him all the best at Tottenham.
“We said goodbye and wish him all the best,” said Openda. “Tottenham is a good team in England. Timo will show his quality there, for sure,” he added.
Werner struggled to live up to expectations upon leaving RB Leipzig for Chelsea in 2020 and hasn’t really rediscovered his goalscoring touch upon returning to Germany.
Now 27, Werner needs to prove his doubters wrong and Tottenham have now given him that chance under Ange Postecoglou.
Tottenham also linked with Openda
The irony here is that reports in December suggested that Tottenham were interested in snapping up Leipzig hitman Openda.
A fee of around £75million was mentioned then, around five times the price Tottenham could pay to land Werner permanently.
Spurs may well keep an eye on Openda between now and the end of the season, in case they want to make a big splash for a new striker.
One situation may be that Werner ends up back with RB Leipzig and Spurs go for Openda, who has now offered words of praise for Postecoglou’s side.
Werner is in the door though and now has the opportunity to prove that Tottenham don’t need to spend on Openda this summer.
