Jay Bothroyd has backed Arsenal to sign Chelsea target Moises Caicedo if they ‘can’t get Declan Rice‘ during the summer transfer window.

Both midfielders could be on the move in the summer, or even perhaps during the January transfer window if you are money-crazy Chelsea, with a host of Premier League clubs keen on their talents.

Former Arsenal academy star Bothroyd labelled Brighton’s hard-hitting midfielder as someone who ‘keeps the ball really well’ and has a sense of ‘maturity’ to his game, as he told The Transfer Show on Sky Sports.

It has been suggested that West Ham captain Rice is Arsenal’s main transfer target for the summer, and Mikel Arteta and Co could be helped if they secure the Premier League title at the end of the season.

Yes, Rice is a boyhood Chelsea fan and he came through their academy as a youngster before thriving at West Ham, but given the road Graham Potter’s side are going down, then they might not be in the Champions League at all next season.

Nonetheless, if it’s not Rice for the Gunners, then Bothroyd would more than happily see £75m-rated star Caicedo land on the club’s doorstep.

“He’s (Moises Caicedo) industrious, he keeps the ball really well,” said Bothroyd. “He seems calm. He seems to play with maturity, which I think is a big thing.

“He doesn’t jump into challenges. He times them really well. I think that’s important. But there will be loads of teams that will want him.

“Manchester United is key. They need to revamp their midfield. I think Chelsea have got loads of midfielders. It could be a fit, maybe Kante will be fit.

“Arsenal are looking for one, there is talk of Declan Rice. If they can’t get Declan, then they can get him.”

ARSENAL’S EDGE

It wasn’t so long ago that Arsenal missed out on Champions League football, Liverpool missed out on winning four trophies by just two games and Chelsea were the European Cup winners.

Yet, fast forward to the summer, and Arsenal could be champions of England, whilst the above two teams might land in the Europa League, or even worse, no Europe at all.

If that’s the case, then surely Arsenal have the edge over their rivals over signing these sought-after midfielders that could make the world of difference to the team that they join.
