Tottenham Hotspur made huge strides last season, even if fans were annoyed and frustrated with how things ended.

After a blistering start for Ange Postecoglou, in his debut campaign as manager in England’s top-flight, which included them sitting top after ten matches.

They ended the campaign in fifth spot – a Europa League place – transformed their style of play, changed the mood around Hotspur Way and got the fans back on their side.

It also needs to be noted that Spurs lost star man Harry Kane days before the 2023/24 season started, yet it didn’t seem to hinder their performances.

But still, by the end of it all, the London club were 25 points behind eventual Manchester City in the table – Manchester City pipped Arsenal to the Premier League title on the last day of the season.

The aim ahead of the new campaign will be, at a minimum, to return to the Champions League and win a trophy. They have started pre-season well – Lucas Bergvall has been impressed by Mikey Moore.

But Darren Ambrose feels there is a player out there who can help Tottenham close the gap on the champions of England.

The former Crystal Palace midfielder highlighted how Postecoglou’s side scored 74 goals last term – 22 behind the highest scores in the league, Manchester City.

Ambrose thinks that gap can be closed, and as a result, it can push Spurs closer to the top of the table.

That’s why he wants his boyhood team to sign Ivan Toney from Brentford  – he is currently on holiday after England’s Euro 2024 heartache.

The 28-year-old was described as someone who ‘oozes confidence’ and now Ambrose wants him at Hotspur Way, as he told talkSPORT (27/07/24 at 2:15 pm).

Tottenham Hotspur told to sign Ivan Toney

“Is he the answer, it depends on what the question is,” said Ambrose. “If the question is, do Spurs need to score more goals? What did they get 74 goals last season? I think Manchester City got 96, so what, 22 goals behind? Could he be the answer to closing that gap, in terms of goals, which will, in turn, close the gap in terms of points? Yes, I think he will.

“I think with Ange Postecoglou and the way he plays – to get an out-and-out number nine. I don’t think Richarlison is the answer. So, yes, I think Ivan Toney is the better option.

“He oozes confidence and I think Postecoglou could do with someone like that – Toney could really work with the way Postecoglou plays –  He will get chances. Add 10 or 15 more goals, and you are seeing a top-three side there.”

Ivan Toney looking to move

Sources have told HITC Tottenham’s transfer stance on Toney, as he pushes for a move away from Brentford with 12 months left on his deal.

From the Bees’s perspective, something has got to give and they will have to either sell or pen him down to a new contract.

It’s pretty obvious which one it’s going to be, but as of this moment, nothing seems to be moving.

Perhaps this calls for a Daniel Levy special and Tottenham signing Toney on the last day of the summer transfer window – although, Toney has been backed to sign for Chelsea over Tottenham.
