Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur were in the same boat last season, in the sense that they had new managers and no European football.

As a result, the expectations on them were a lot tougher and their fans were hoping they would maximise not playing those midweek European games.

By the end of it, Tottenham and Chelsea were watching Unai Emery’s Aston Villa secure Champions League football, with one side of London set to play In the Europa League ahead of the new campaign and the other preparing for the Conference League.

Either way, their squads are going to need bulking up and they have already made some interesting moves in the summer transfer market.

Ange Postecoglou’s standout capture so far has been Tottenham securing the transfer of Archie Gray from Leeds United.

Meanwhile, at Stamford Bridge, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall joined Chelsea from Leicester City – both players were standout performers in the Championship last term.

But will either club push the boat out and sign a player more proven in the Premier League?

Gabby Agbonlahor put forward a name he feels that would join Chelsea over their London rivals because they are a ‘bigger club in every department’, as he told talkSPORT

Sources have told HITC Tottenham’s transfer stance on Ivan Toney, with the Brentford hitman expected to leave this summer.

Whilst Agbonlahor agreed that Spurs are ‘more desperate’ for a player like Toney, he backed him to move to West London instead and lauded the ‘arrogance’ in his game.

Ivan Toney would pick Chelsea transfer over Tottenham

“Spurs are more desperate for him than Chelsea are,” said Agbonlahor. “He can do a job at Chelsea. But they do have Jackson available. They have got Nkunku. They have Sterling and Mudryk on the left-hand side.

On which club Toney would pick: “Chelsea. Spurs don’t win trophies. Why would you go to Spurs if I am him? I am going to Chelsea. Bigger club in every department, so I am going to go to Chelsea. You are going to get better money. You are going to be playing with better players as well. Chelsea have got a better squad of players than Spurs.

“And the history of Chelsea. Drogba, Lampard, Ashley Cole and John Terry. That era of Chelsea as well. I think he would choose them – I think he is top. Very, very good player. He has that arrogance in a good way where he is confident”

Ivan Toney with England at Euro 2024

Critics will be annoyed that Toney didn’t earn more minutes under the now-departed Gareth Southgate, as England were, once again, beaten in the final of the European Championships.

But when Toney was called upon, he did his job, including scoring a stunning no-look penalty during the shootout win over Switzerland.

Even Bukayo Saka stated that he is ‘in awe’ of Toney, with the 28-year-old surrounded by star-studded players on the international stage.

Many of his England players are performing on the highest stage, playing in Europe and challenging for trophies, as you feel it is time for Toney to do the same.
