- EXCLUSIVE from Graeme Bailey
HITC understands that Virgil van Dijk has confirmed to Liverpool that he wants to sign a new contract with the club.
Liverpool will now look to tie the Dutch defender down with a contract extension before the end of the year.
Virgil van Dijk has been heavily linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League this summer in a deal that would see him follow Jurgen Klopp out of the door.
Arne Slot has replaced Klopp in the Anfield hot seat, and HITC understands that the new Liverpool boss made it clear to the club hierarchy that he wants Van Dijk to stay this summer.
HITC has been told by sources that Van Dijk has not talked with any club other than Liverpool this summer despite interest from Saudi.
Staying in Merseyside next season remains his top option above anything else.

Virgil van Dijk contract talks
Van Dijk’s current contract is set to expire next June, but he has made it clear that he wants to extend his stay.
At 33 years old, it is unlikely that Liverpool will get the chance to cash in on Van Dijk in future transfer windows, but retaining him and his leadership skills next season will be vital for the start of Slot’s tenure.
He remains a key player at Anfield having played every available minute of their Premier League campaign last season.
With the future of Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold also being questioned, it is important for Slot to not lose three of his most important players in the same window as he starts a new chapter at Anfield.
Van Dijk staying on at Liverpool also gives the club extra time to source a good long-term replacement for the Dutchman.
The Reds are yet to complete a signing under Slot this summer but have been linked with a move for Real Sociedad winger Takefusa Kubo.
