When you’re a League One club – and Sunderland face their fourth-straight season in the third tier – signing unproven youngsters from Premier League clubs often becomes part of the strategy.
And it’s a strategy Lee Johnson’s Black Cats have embraced.
This summer, Sunderland have snapped up Harrison Sohna, from Aston Villa; Ethan Kachosa, from Leeds United; Cameron Jessup, from Crystal Palace; and Tyrese Dyce, from West Brom. They have also landed Frederik Alves Ibsen, Callum Doyle and Nathan Broadhead on loan.
And McIntyre could be the latest fresh face to walk through the door.

The promising shot-stopper was released by Everton at the end of last season but it looks as though he won’t be a free agent much longer.
Sunderland have offered McIntyre a contract, although it’s understood the teenager has yet to put pen to paper.
“Jack has been with us for most of pre-season and has done very well,” U23 coach Elliott Dickman told the Chronicle earlier this month.

“We’re trying to make it a permanent move – but it’s not easy sometimes. He’s still got things to work on but he missed a lot of football due to an injury when he was at Everton.
“I’ve been really pleased with some of his games in pre-season and with some of the things he did last night (McIntyre played for Sunderland U23s during their 3-2 win at Burnley on Monday).”
Sunderland recently completed the permanent signings of Niall Huggins and Dennis Cirkin, with another Premier League prospect potentially on his way.
His agent? None other than Roberto De Fanti…
