Joe Rodon could still leave Tottenham Hotspur before Monday’s deadline, as The Telegraph note Brighton & Hove Albion are considering a transfer if Dan Burn joins Newcastle United.
The Seagulls are eager to hand manager Graham Potter a new defensive option in the final days if Burn leaves. Newcastle are keen to make the towering 6 ft 7 center-half the latest to join following their Saudi-led takeover. Burn has also made it clear that he wants the move.
Brighton have rejected Newcastle’s opening offer for Burn’s transfer, but the Magpies are encouraged to improve their bid. Yet some in the St James’ Park hierarchy feel the Seagulls set an unrealistic valuation for a 29-year-old out of contract in 2023 and wants to leave.
If Newcastle do up their bid, Brighton will give further thought to a last-ditch transfer for Tottenham outcast Rodon. The Times reported in December that Jose Mourinho’s £11m signing from Swansea in 2020 already featured on the Amex Stadium side’s shopping list.
Potter has monitored Rodon’s situation in north London having coached the Wales star at Swansea. But Antonio Conte was reluctant to letting the defender leave at the start of the window. He wanted Rodon to offer depth behind Eric Dier as his central centre-half option.
Conte wants possible Brighton target Rodon sold amid Newcastle’s Burn bid
Rodon has continued to live in the Tottenham wilderness since the market opened with the 24-year-old making seven appearances so far this season. He has only featured once in the Premier League, as well, coming under former Spurs head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.
Conte has only fielded the 22-cap international twice in all competitions since taking charge in November. Rodon – who Mourinho considered ‘perfect’ – playing so infrequently has fed speculation around the defender’s future at Spurs.
Additionally, The Times noted this Monday that Conte wants to see Spurs sell Rodon before next Monday’s deadline. So, Brighton should have a clear enough path to secure a transfer with Tottenham for Rodon if Newcastle sign Burn. The Sun note the Seagulls want £15m.
