Sevilla may be expecting a new bid from Newcastle United for Diego Carlos, but it now seems that the Magpies may look elsewhere.

This was one of the great transfer sagas of the January transfer window with Newcastle chasing a big-money defensive signing.

The Telegraph broke the news early in January, reporting that Newcastle were keen to secure Diego Carlos in a huge deal.

Diego Carlos wanted the move, even agreeing personal terms with Newcastle before a fee was sorted.

Having submitted a transfer request, it looked like the Brazilian star was desperate to push through a January move.

Hailed as ‘sensational’ by Spanish football expert Terry Gibson, Diego Carlos could have been a huge capture for Newcastle.

No deal was done though with Newcastle instead going for Dan Burn as their only central defensive addition in January.

Marca reported in February that Sevilla are expecting Newcastle to make a new bid to finally sign Diego Carlos at the end of the season.

However, that may not actually be the case as Newcastle weigh up summer deals.

Transfer insider Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that he doesn’t think Diego Carlos is all that much of a priority for Newcastle anymore.

Jones claims he has been checking out a move for the Brazilian and Newcastle seem to be looking elsewhere.

Newcastle are still likely to bring in another right-footed centre back to become Dan Burn’s long-term partner.

Diego Carlos would have ticked the boxes for Newcastle, but with the centre back now 29, the Magpies may look to spend their money on a younger option.

Diego Carlos is a similar age profile to Burn, so pairing them up may not be the plan for Newcastle this summer.
