Dominik Szoboszlai will be hoping his luck changes when he returns to Liverpool next month.

The 23-year-old started the season pretty strongly and impressed many people with his early displays in the Premier League.

But his form then dipped at Liverpool, a minor injury didn’t help matters, nor did his team collapsing in the Premier League title race, and his season fizzled out.

Dominik Szoboszlai would have hoped for some magic to be added to his performances at Euro 2024, but that hasn’t been the case.

Hungary are in a pretty tough group because they are alongside hosts Germany, who beat them 2-0 on Wednesday, dark horses Switzerland, who they lost to in their opening game and Steve Clarke’s Scotland.

As of this moment, they have zero points to their name and are heading down the road of losing all three of their group matches.

That’s probably why there is an air of frustration in the air and Szoboszlai showcased that as his team were heading for a defeat to the Germans on Wednesday.

With seconds left before the referee was going to blow his final whistle, the Liverpool midfielder proceeded to boot the ball away for no reason after a stoppage and was booked.

Martin Keown was left baffled by his actions and questioned ‘you wonder whose time is he wasting there?’, as he told Match of the Day on BBC One.

Hungary were 2-0 down, in the 92nd minute of the game and moments away from the final whistle being blown.

But lead Match of the Day commentator Guy Mowbray added by saying that Szoboszlai just looked ‘fed up’.

“A yellow card is shown for kicking the ball away to Dominik Szoboszlai,” said Mowbray. “I don’t think the yellow card was for the challenge. I think it’s because Szoboszlai then just launched it. There he is.”

Keown responded: “You wonder whose time is he wasting there? It qualifies for a booking.”

Mowbray added: “He is tired and fed up, I should think.”

Dominik Szoboszlai under Arne Slot next season

You feel there is massive pressure on Szoboszlai’s shoulders for next season because his form hasn’t been great for months now.

Arne Slot is the new manager in the building, so all the players have to start a new chapter.

The Liverpool boss will want to add his own fingerprints to proceedings and that doesn’t guarantee anyone a starting place.

Szoboszlai has tremendous ball-carrying ability, but without the ball and the pace of the game, he has been lacking big time and needs to turn it up, or else, he is going to be left behind.
