Leeds United told Daniel Farke did something a coach has never done during Middlesbrough defeat

Leeds United’s season has got off to a rocky start after they were dumped out of the EFL Cup by Middlesbrough on Wednesday night.

After conceding three and picking only one point during their Championship opener against newly-promoted Portsmouth at the weekend, Daniel Farke’s side conceded three more at home.

It puts serious pressure on the Leeds boss because that’s two Championship teams – in different competitions – that have caused them serious problems.

It all stems from Leeds United losing the Championship play-off final to Southampton in May and all the implications that have come with that.

So, every move Farke makes, from how the team defend, starting players and in-game substitutions, is getting scrutinised to the nth degree because patience is pretty low at Elland Road.

That was proven to be the case as Michael Carrick’s Boro wiped the floor with them and sent them packing out of the League Cup pretty early.

By the hour mark, Middlesbrough were 2-0 up, cruising and threatening to score more goals rather than just sit on their lead.

That’s when Farke decided to throw everything at it and make five substitutions at once to try and change his team’s fortunes around.

Andy Hinchcliffe was left amazed by his actions and how he had never seen a coach do such a thing before, as he told Sky Sports Football (14/08/24).

The EFL expert added that Farke is just ‘throwing the kitchen sink at it’, but it is ‘understandable’ given Leeds’ situation at the time.

But all of that would go to ruin because Leeds would end up conceding a third minutes later and then the game was well and truly gone.

Leeds United knocked out of the Carabao Cup

“Well, Leeds have to act,” said commentator Seb Hutchinson. “Rutter has come on for Aaronson. He is the first of a fair few substituted for Leeds United. Daniel Farke ringing the changes, to say the least.

“Wober has gone off. Struijk has come on. Gnonto has also entered the field. Gruev and Bogle. They are all the men coming on here. Five changes for Leeds United. This is quite extraordinary, but this is needs must from Daniel Farke.”

Hinchcliffe responded: “I can’t ever remember a coach ever doing something like this. Just throwing the kitchen sink at it. But it’s understandable, he has to change the way the game is flowing.”

Georginio Rutter to leave Leeds United for Brighton & Hove Albion?

One of the men who came onto the pitch for Leeds was attacking midfielder Georginio Rutter, but this could now be the last time fans see him in their shirt.

Sources have told HITC that Brighton have met the release clause in Rutter’s contract at Leeds and he could now head for the exit door.

This would be a huge body blow for the Yorkshire outfit because Archie Gray signed for Tottenham Hotspur at the start of the window and he hasn’t been replaced yet.

And Leeds are still looking for a replacement for Crysencio Summerville after he joined West Ham. It’s hard enough losing these players, but to not invest it, is hurting the start of their season.
