Leeds United fans will be licking their wounds because Archie Gray is now a Tottenham Hotspur player.

On Tuesday, Tottenham secured the talents of the highly-rated 18-year-old from Leeds, with Joe Rodon moving in the other direction.

Many Leeds fans expected one of their key players to leave after they lost the Championship play-off final to Southampton.

But they were all hoping it wouldn’t be Archie Gray because he is one of their own and he is a very bright prospect.

Andy Townsend stated that it’s a ‘huge move’ for Gray, who has football in his blood, with many generations of the Gray family repping Leeds.

But now he begins a new chapter as a Tottenham player and Alan Brazil added ‘I wish him well’ under Ange Postecoglou.

Last season, Gray played at fullback and in the middle of the park for Daniel Farke, as he showcased unbelievable versatility at such a young age.

But Alan Brazil admitted that he just ‘can’t work out’ what type of player Gray is after watching him play different roles, as he told talkSPORT (03/07/24).

Archie Gray’s versatility

“By the way, it’s an interesting one, right,” said Brazil. “I don’t know his dad. But I know his Grandad, Frankie Gray. I know Eddie, who is in the same part of Glasgow as I am from. I know them both very well.

“I wish this kid, I really do, I wish him well. I can’t work out if he is a fullback or a midfield player, at the moment.”

Andy Townsend added: “It’s a huge move for him and a great chance. It really is and hopefully, he does great.”

Archie Gray is better suited to playing in midfield

Of course, when you can play two key positions at such a high level as Gray can, then why would you waste it?

But you feel the teenager is better in the middle of the park and you could just see him complementing the other midfielders at the club.

A midfield of James Maddison as the ten, then Gray and Yves Bissouma further back would be a killer.

Don’t forget Rodrigo Bentancur, who will perform much better next season because he is over his injury woes, and then there is Pape Matar Sarr, who is a bit of an underrated figure at Hotspur Way.
