Chelsea have split opinion in the transfer market since their takeover in 2022.

The Blues have spent over £1billion on new signings since Todd Boehly took charge at Stamford Bridge, but it hasn’t yet improved results on the pitch.

On top of that, Chelsea‘s method to fund their huge spending has been cut-throat. They have sold a number of academy players as they represent pure profit under Profit and Sustainability Rules.

The likes of Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori has been sold while Trevoh Chalobah has been told to leave this summer after being left out of their pre-season squad.

Another academy product who looks to be on their way out of Stamford Bridge is Conor Gallagher.

Atletico Madrid have struck a deal worth around £40million for Conor Gallagher after the 24-year-old rejected a contract offer from the Blues.

Gallagher was a shining light for Chelsea in an otherwise bleak campaign last season.

However, Chelsea have been unable to agree terms over a new contract and he looks to be on his way out of the club.

HITC revealed earlier this week that Tottenham are ready to respond to Atletico Madrid’s interest in Gallagher.

Jamie O’Hara reacted to the news and slammed Chelsea for their decision to let Gallagher leave.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said “I think it’s a disgrace. They’re letting him go. He’s a captain of the football club, works his tail off, loves the team.

“Everyone likes him and he gives everything on the football pitch. You’ll never see him go missing on the football pitch. What he lacks in quality, he makes up for in heart and desire.

“I think they’re making a mistake getting rid of players like that.”

Are Chelsea making a mistake?

Chelsea’s transfer strategy in recent years has been bold – but ultimately unsuccessful.

Signing stars to long-term contracts has not had the impact that Chelsea hoped it would, and actually some of their best performers have come from the academy.

That includes Gallagher, but he is now the next academy star sent to the chopping block to fuel more big-money signings.

There is a reason the likes of Tottenham, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid all showed an interest in Gallagher, but Chelsea might not realise it until he is gone.
