Danny Murphy has stated that he doesn’t think Newcastle United will secure the transfer of Tottenham Hotspur target and Leicester City midfielder, James Maddison.

The former Tottenham midfielder was talking about how important Maddison is to the Foxes and he thinks, when the England international returns from injury, then Brendan Rodgers’ side can move up the Premier League table, as he told talkSPORT (11/01/23).

Despite playing for a team that has struggled for the past two seasons, Maddison’s form has been outstanding, hence why teams in the Premier League are keen on securing his talents and why he was picked to go to the Qatar World Cup with England.

The 26-year-old has seven goals from his 13 Premier League games this term, added with four assists, after hitting 12 in 35 from the previous campaign.

Tottenham have been told a possible Maddison transfer is ‘one to watch‘, with the midfielder’s current deal at the King Power expiring in 2024, whilst Fabrizio Romano has spoken about Newcastle thinking the former Norwich City man is the ‘perfect’ player for them after long-term interest.

Either way, when it was put to Danny Murphy by talkSPORT host Jim White about Maddison’s future, he quickly dismissed any thought of a move to St James’ Park.

“I think, at the end of the season, if they end up mid-table, or thereabouts, which I believe they will, especially when they get Maddison back,” said Murphy. “He is a big miss for them.

“I think a chairman and an owner will look at Brendan (Rodgers) and go ‘you know what, he has got some backbone’.”

Jim White stated: “Well, you wonder whether Maddison is about to head to the club that we were about to talk about, Newcastle United.”

Murphy responded: “I don’t think so. I really don’t.”

MADDISON SHOULD JOIN NEWCASTLE

Leicester were flying high once upon a time themselves and in Europe, but selling key players added with cost-cutting has hurt them badly and the same will happen when Maddison leaves.

If the goalscoring midfielder had a choice, then he should pick Newcastle because of the wave they are riding, the attacking football Howe plays and the players at St James’ Park suit his style.

At Tottenham, it’s not even known if Antonio Conte, whose defensive-minded system wouldn’t suit Maddison, will be there at the start of next season.

And that’s an uncertainty Maddison can’t walk into.
