Tottenham face three weeks without their star man after he picked up another injury

Gareth Bale may have failed to hit the ground running on his return to Tottenham, but he could have an opportunity to shine in the absence of Harry Kane.

The club’s star man faces three weeks on the sidelines after injuring both his ankles in Thursday’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool, and the task of replacing a striker with 19 goals in 29 games is a daunting one.

That responsibility could fall upon the shoulders of Bale, who returned to the club on a season-long loan in September 2020.

He’s scored four goals in 14 appearances since then, but has failed to force his way into Jose Mourinho’s first-choice XI.

Former Aston Villa, Chelsea and Marseille striker Tony Cascarino believes the Welshman is capable of stepping up in Kane’s absence.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s match against Brighton on talkSPORT’s Weekend Sports Breakfast, he said: “I’m not so sure the service is as good as it once was for Son Heung-min, because he was outstanding (when Kane was injured before).

“But he also had players around him playing very, very well.

“Now, Brighton have sort got themselves back together slightly; they got a great win at Leeds, and a huge number of draws, but they’re not getting beaten.

“They’ve been getting points on the board. So if you’re relying just on Son, Gareth Bale has to really step up for Spurs.

“His performances have got to come and he’s got to be direct.

“I haven’t really seen him use his pace. We all know how quick he is – he can be devastating.

“We’ve hardly seen that since he’s come to Spurs.”

It’s a 7.15pm kick-off at the Amex for Mourinho’s men.
