Arne Slot has put his faith in Liverpool’s academy stars this pre-season with the Dutchman yet to complete a new signing.

The Reds are currently on a tour of the United States where they will soon face Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United in pre-season friendlies.

Arne Slot took charge of his first Liverpool match on Saturday where he led his side to a 1-0 win over Real Betis.

With several international Liverpool stars yet to return to training this summer, Slot used the Real Betis game as an opportunity to assess some of the club’s younger players.

One academy player in action was 17-year-old Trey Nyoni, who came on as a substitute after the half-hour mark before being replaced by Lewis Koumas in the second half.

Gary McAllister praises ‘fantastic’ academy star

Despite his short cameo against Real Betis, Nyoni drew plenty of attention after playing a part in Dominik Szoboszlai’s goal just minutes after entering the pitch.

Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister – who has been watching the Reds train in the United States – singled Nyoni out for praise.

Speaking to Sky Sports, McAllister said “Young Trey was fantastic. He’s 17 years of age, in and amongst the senior players and he looks very, very comfortable.

“All credit to the academy and his belief in himself – it looked very easy, he’s very impressive.

“Just the way he receives the ball, and the thing for me is that he continually looks forward.

“In modern-day football it’s all about keeping the ball and not giving it away and playing a little bit safe, but I liked the way he turned and played forwards. It’s really encouraging.”

Nyoni made headlines last season after becoming Liverpool’s youngest-ever player following his debut in the FA Cup against Southampton.

With his first taste of first-team football, this summer’s pre-season preparations are a golden opportunity for him to force his way into Slot’s plans at Anfield.
