According to the Mirror, Aston Villa could now end up spending €30m (£26m) on Ruben Amorim after sacking Steven Gerrard.

Aston Villa ready to spend big on Gerrard replacement

Well, the Daily Mail believe Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens are ready to pay one of the biggest salaries in the Premier League in order to land an elite coach.

However, those in the Villa Park boardroom will have to spend a world record sum to lure Amorim – their No.1 target – to the Midlands, even before taking his salary into account.

The Mirror believe Sporting Lisbon have placed a release clause worth £26m into the 37-year-old’s contract, which, if triggered, would make him the most expensive manager in history.

As things stand, the €25m (£22m) Bayern Munich handed RB Leipzig for Julian Nagelsmann is the largest sum spent on a manager in football history.

According to Sky Sports, Amorim was on the radar of Chelsea before Todd Boehly hired Graham Potter, and even held talks with the Blues.

90min also claimed that Leeds were considering the Sporting Lisbon coach as a replacement for Marcelo Bielsa, before opting for Jesse Marsch instead.

Ruben Amorim could transform Aston Villa

In our view, Aston Villa could be sniffing around a coach who has the potential to become one of the very best.

Amorim guided Sporting Lisbon to their first league title in 19 years last season, after the Portuguese giants spent €10m (£9m) to buy him out of his contract at Braga.

Remarkably, the Lisbon-born tactician has won 97 of his 137 games in management, losing just 23, since he began his senior coaching career at Casa Pia in 2018.

Amorim boasts a fantastic record, and while he would cost Aston Villa a significant sum, it could prove to be worth it if he brings success back to Villa Park.
