Chelsea have approached Ruben Amorim to become their new manager – just months after Leeds United were looking at appointing him.
The Blues stunned many by sacking Thomas Tuchel on Wednesday morning, just hours after a 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb.
New owner Todd Boehly has made the first big decision of his reign and is now on the hunt for a new manager.
Becoming Chelsea boss can be a poisoned chalice; two managers have won the Champions League there and found themselves out of work inside 18 months.
Boehly must now look to find a manager for the years to come and he has irons in the fire.
Chelsea have approached Ruben Amorim
The main name in the mix is Graham Potter and Chelsea were given permission to speak to the Brighton and Hove Albion boss on Wednesday.
Yet this isn’t a foregone conclusion and Chelsea do have other names that could replace Tuchel.
Sky Sports report that Boehly and Chelsea have now spoken to directly to Sporting boss Ruben Amorim about potentially becoming the new Blues boss.
Amorim, 37, has become one of the top young managers in the world during his time with Sporting.
Amorim guided Sporting to the league title in 2021 and masterminded another great win on Wednesday night, hammering Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 in the Champions League.
We would still suggest that Potter is the clear favourite for the job but Amorim is suddenly a serious contender to replace Tuchel.
Major interest in Amorim is no surprise given his outstanding work at Sporting and he was actually eyed up for a move to England earlier this year.
90Min reported in February that Leeds United were eyeing up Amorim to potentially replace Marcelo Bielsa.
Leeds ended up going for Jesse Marsch instead and now perceivably bigger fish in the Premier League are now targeting Amorim.
Leeds may soon end up facing Amorim in the Premier League in a real twist of events, but Potter is surely the main man for the job right now even after these talks.
