Back in January, Newcastle spent plenty of time chasing Sevilla defender Diego Carlos, only to fail in their pursuit of the Brazilian.

It seemed that Eddie Howe would go back in for the South American this summer, although Aston Villa have already wrapped up a deal worth £26m.

While that may come as a blow to Newcastle, it does potentially mean Tyrone Mings – another target for the Magpies – could now leave.

What’s the story?

Well, it has been said that Howe wants to bring the England international to St James’ Park.

Now, the Telegraph believe the 29-year-old’s future at Villa Park is in doubt, as Steven Gerrard is targeting another centre-back addition as well.

Even just with the arrival of Diego Carlos, we can envisage Ming departing.

Therefore, if another centre-back arrived in the Midlands, then Howe will surely sense he can lure the £20m man away from the Villans.

It was Howe who brought Mings to Bournemouth in 2015, so this rumour could well have legs as we enter the summer window.

In 37 appearances this season, the towering defender scored one goal, while also providing three assists.

Newcastle should avoid Tyrone Mings

In our view, Newcastle should decide against signing Mings, for the same reason we believe Aston Villa’s move for Diego Carlos is a bad idea.

The Brazilian is 29 years of age, with Mings not far off that at 28.

Spending huge sums on players nearing their thirties isn’t a good idea, when younger options – such as the 22-year-old Sven Botman, another Newcastle target – are available.

The likes of Diego Carlos and Mings will not command the fees they were signed for at the end of their contracts.

On the contrary, a player like Botman will see his value increase, as he becomes better and better over the years.

It ensures Newcastle have good resale value within their side, which will help when it comes to squad building within Financial Fair Play guidelines.

Whatever happens, it seems Mings will be leaving Aston Villa this summer – only time will tell if Newcastle is his next destination.
