Kaveh Solhekol has claimed that Diego Carlos has turned down a new contract at Sevilla because he wants a move to Newcastle, as he told the Transfer Show on Sky Sports (25/01/22 at 5:05 pm).
The Sky reporter has added that Sevilla have offered to double Carlos’ wages in order for him to stay at the club, but the centre-back isn’t interested in such an offer.
Eddie Howe has brought in two new faces during the January transfer window, including Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.
Trippier opted to leave the La Liga champions to move to a team in the middle of a relegation dogfight in England’s top-flight.
And it seems as though 28-year-old, Carlos, is willing to leave a Sevilla team on the coattails of leaders Real Madrid in Spain.
If Newcastle are to sign the hard-hitting defender, then they would need to put £38 million on the table for his talents.
“Newcastle United want to sign Diego Carlos,” said Solhekol. “They can have him. But they have to offer €45m, which is about £38 million.
“So far, Newcastle have refused to pay around €30 million (£25m), so they need to put another €10m on the table.
“What is interesting is that we found out this afternoon that Sevilla have offered, Diego Carlos, a new contract. This new contract, it would mean his wages would almost double and he would earn pretty much what Newcastle are offering him.
“What is interesting, and good news for Newcastle United supporters, is that he doesn’t want to sign this new contract. He himself wants to go to Newcastle.”

Whilst some may have expected Newcastle to bring in more faces by now, it needs to be remembered that they can’t afford to panic in these situations.
For the Magpies, it’s about quality, not quantity, so if that means only signing four players this month, then so be it.
But, one thing is for sure, one of those players has to be a centre-back because the defensive part of Newcastle’s game has been their biggest problem this term.
