According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United are back in the mix to sign Sven Botman, despite recent reports indicating that the Dutchman would be heading to AC Milan.
As we’re sure all Newcastle fans remember, Botman was one of the Magpies’ top targets in the January transfer window, and the Tyneside club went to great lengths to try to sign him.
Unfortunately for United, they couldn’t strike a deal to bring the defender to St James’ Park in the winter window, but now, they’re once again being encouraged to make a bid for the centre-half.
If Newcastle were to have a bid accepted for the defender who has been dubbed a ‘machine’, then agreeing personal terms shouldn’t be too difficult.
Amanda Staveley admitted in an interview with The Athletic earlier this year that Botman does want to join the Tyneside club, so this may just be a case of convincing Lille to accept a bid.
Of course, AC Milan’s interest does complicate things. With all due respect to Newcastle, Milan can offer a lot of things that the Magpies can’t at the moment. After all, they’re the reigning Italian champions and will be playing Champions League football next season.
However, with The Telegraph reporting that the deal for Botman to move to Milan has stalled, this could be Newcastle’s chance to pounce and finally bring Botman to St James’ Park this summer.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa have also been credited with an interest, but as we all know, Villa can’t offer the same financial incentives as Newcastle these days.
This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.
