Shay Given has named six players he would love Newcastle to sign this summer on the Premier League 2021-22 show – including Leeds star Kalvin Phillips. He also suggested a return for Ivan Toney from Brentford.
Newcastle produced a stunning second half to the campaign under Eddie Howe. The first club to fail to pick up a win inside their first 14 Premier League games, but they still managed to finish in a lofty tenth position.
In January, Howe brought in Chris Wood, Dan Burn, Matty Targett, Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes and all five worked – even if Wood did not score the amount of goals he would have liked, and Trippier being injured.

Speaking to the Premier League’s 2021-22 show, Newcastle legend Given says he expects his old side to make four or five signings. He suggested Dean Henderson, James Tarkowski, Phillips, Christian Eriksen and Ivan Toney.
“Just looking through the league. Dean Henderson; a strong possibility he could come and challenge Dubravka. Tarkowski at Burnley, he is on a free. Kalvin Phillips in midfield, I know Leeds fans won’t want to let him go.
“Eriksen on a free. Looking at a striker, maybe Ivan Toney or Tammy Abraham who has had a great season in Italy. There will be four or five signings, but they need to be the right signings,” Given said.

So, which ones could Newcastle sign? It is ambitious, given Henderson, Tarkowski, Phillips and Abraham are England internationals. As Given says, there is a solid chance Newcastle could bring in Henderson this summer.
Reports say they are ‘close’ to getting him. Tarkowski is a target, with West Ham cooling their interest as they expect Newcastle to get him. £60million target Phillips is another on Newcastle’s radar.
Eriksen has a decision to make – with his contract up. Another to be linked, but he could return to Spurs. Toney might be tempted to return, Keith Downie saying he has unfinished business after leaving the Toon in 2018.
Perhaps the only one not to be linked is Abraham, who seems content in Italy with Roma. There is a chance Newcastle could get the prior five, but Abraham might just be out of their reach at the moment.
