Keith Downie has told Give Me Sport that Ivan Toney has ‘unfinished business’ at Newcastle, amid reports the Toon could bring the striker back to St. James’ Park. Toney left Newcastle to join Peterborough in 2018.
Toney, 26, came through the ranks at Northampton before joining Newcastle in 2015. But he failed to make a breakthrough on Tyneside. He went on loan six times during his three-year spell at Newcastle.
He only ever played four times for the Toon’s senior side. But now, after working his way through the Football League, he has shown he is capable of being a top Premier League striker. He has 12 goals in 32 top-tier games.
The Telegraph claim Newcastle are interested in signing Toney – a move that would bring him back to the club after four years. Downie thinks there is a chance a move could materialise, and that he has “unfinished business”.
“He’ll feel he’s got unfinished business at Newcastle. He was there as a youngster, he was released by Rafa Benitez, never got an opportunity and it would be a step up in terms of the size of club that he’s playing for.”
Downie: Toney has ‘unfinished business’ at Newcastle
What a signing Toney would be, at Newcastle. Callum Wilson reminded all just what he is capable of, arguably his side’s best player against Arsenal on Monday night. Chris Wood has done an admirable job since coming in.
But Newcastle are likely to sign a big-name striker and Toney could be the one they get. Perhaps, in with a chance of an England call-up soon, Toney would have the bit between his teeth if given the chance to rejoin the Toon.
