The Mirror claim West Ham have dropped their interest in signing Burnley defender James Tarkowski on a free transfer – as they expect Newcastle to land the England international. David Moyes is said to be an admirer.

Tarkowski, 29, has clocked up 217 appearances for Burnley since joining the club in the summer of 2016 from Brentford. But his time at Burnley is about to end, with his contract due to expire at the end of the season.

West Ham have long been linked with a move for Tarkowski, while Newcastle were said to be keen to land the defender in January. Now, The Toon seem to be closing in on the arrival of the powerhouse centre-back.

The report from The Mirror states that West Ham have now cooled their interest in Tarkowski. That is because they believes Newcastle are closing in on the defender – and are willing to increase his £50k-a-week wages.

West Ham expect Newcastle to sign Tarkowski – Massive for the Toon

Tarkowski would be a sensational signing for Newcastle. The Toon need to bring in some additions in the summer and a centre-back will be among them. Financial Fairplay might also become an issue for Eddie Howe.

So, being able to sign a centre-back that is incredibly proven in the Premier League and is still in his twenties – all on a free, it is a no-brainer. A wonderful signing, if Newcastle can get the better of West Ham.
