According to L’Equipe, Arsenal could now miss out on signing Andre Onana with Lyon pushing to sign the Ajax goalkeeper this summer.
There’s one really big factor here, and that’s Lyon boss Peter Bosz.
The Dutchman is in as Lyon’s new boss having replaced Rudi Garcia, and is now seeking a reunion with Onana having previously worked together at Ajax.
If anybody can tempt Onana into forgetting all about Arsenal and heading off to France, it may well be Bosz – but whether he would play over Anthony Lopes is the big problem.
The Gunners need to buck their ideas up if they want to sign Onana though, as what looked like an ideal move is suddenly becoming difficult to imagine.
Fabrizio Romano claimed in June that Onana was viewed as Arsenal’s ‘perfect’ target, having seen goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana recommend a move for his former Barcelona youth goalkeeper.
Last week though, Charles Watts suggested that Arsenal may now be moving away from the idea of signing Onana and focusing on Aaron Ramsdale instead; a bold pivot with Edu seemingly hesitating.
This new report claims Arsenal are in talks to sign Onana, but have yet to guarantee that he will be first-choice goalkeeper at the Emirates given question marks over Bernd Leno’s future.
Ajax only want €8million (£6.9million), but Lyon have now moved ahead of Arsenal in the race having held talks with the 25-year-old’s agents in recent days.
The Cameroonian ace has had his 12-month ban reduced to nine months, meaning he will be back in November following a doping violation.
The ball is in Arsenal’s court; if they don’t make their move for Onana soon, then the lure of playing for Bosz again could scupper the Gunners’ hopes of a bargain deal.
