The transfer window might not be opening for another month, but Liverpool are already making some strides in the summer market, with the Reds reportedly close to signing Aberdeen talent Calvin Ramsay.

According to Sky Sports News, Jurgen Klopp’s side are on the verge of signing the 18-year-old defender, with Liverpool eager to develop the Scottish talent into a long-term rival for Trent Alexander-Arnold in the coming years.

As per the report, Aberdeen are set to receive a club-record £6m fee for Ramsay from Liverpool, with the youngster recently winning the SFWA Young Player of the Year award in what has been a breakout season for the teenager.

Indeed, the transfer is an exciting one for both Ramsay and Liverpool, yet the deal does beg the question, who exactly is the Scottish defender, and what will he bring to the Reds next season as Alexander-Arnold’s understudy.

Let’s start with the fundamentals. Ramsay is a right-back for an Aberdeen side that play with a flat back-four, with the youngster also playing a similar role for Scotland’s U-21s. Though it is important to note that, as per Total Football Analysis, the teenager can play higher up the pitch and even in central midfield.

As a modern-day fullback, Ramsay is a player who enjoys bombing up the pitch and carrying the ball up the pitch, a quality that has won the Scottish prospect many plaudits as well as his set-piece abilities which has helped towards his tally of nine assists in all competition.

Tipped by Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack to become an ‘elite’ fullback in the future, it’s no wonder why so many top clubs are interested in Ramsay, and more specifically, why Liverpool have made an effort to sign the Scotland youth international.

Alexander-Arnold might only be 23-years-old, but the Liverpool star’s impact on the fullback position has already made a huge impression on the next generation, and Ramsay is no different.

The Aberdeen talent has recently revealed that he is a fan of the England international, and with Ramsay now set to become Alexander-Arnold’s understudy at Liverpool, the Scottish youngster now has the chance to learn from one of the best in the business.

Whilst Ramsay’s crossing still needs some work, nine assists in all competitions for an Aberdeen side that look set to finish 10th in the overall SPL table is quite impressive, and the defender will no doubt improve whilst playing with Alexander-Arnold in training.

As mentioned, Liverpool were not the only club to be interested in Ramsay, with Sky Sports News reporting that Aberdeen rejected a club-record offer in January from Bologna for the 18-year-old defender.

With the likes of Leeds United and Tottenham also reportedly chasing Ramsay as well as Manchester United, Liverpool have done well to beat out these Premier League sides for the fullback given how hard it will be for the youngster to break into Klopp’s side.

However, given how well Liverpool have done in recent years in developing young players, Ramsay is at the perfect club to continue his progression as an exciting talent, with the Reds no doubt having plans in place to help push the teenager to the next level.
