Aberdeen starlet Calvin Ramsay has been named the Scottish Football Writers’ Young Player of the Year amid interest from Premier League giants Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United, via the Daily Record.

Craig Gordon, James Forrest, Stuart Armstrong and Kieran Tierney; These are just four of players who previously claimed an award Ramsay is now making room for on his mantelpiece.

It’s easy to forget the 18-year-old right-back had only played four senior games before this season. His rise, at Pittodrie, has been nothing short of meteoric.

Nine assists from 32 games is a remarkable tally from one so young, especially when you consider that Ramsay is, on paper at least, a defender.

“There are some big players, great players, who have won the award and it’s just a massive achievement for me really,” Ramsay beams after fighting off competition from Celtic’s Stephen Walsh, Dundee United’s Ross Graham, former Rangers flyer Nathan Patterson and last year’s winner, Josh Doig of Hibernian.

“On a personal note, coming in for my first full season in professional football, I think I’ve done well. I’ve enjoyed and it to go and get this award has topped it off really.”

The Scottish Trent?

Leeds and Tottenham both scouted Ramsay during Aberdeen’s 1-1 draw with Rangers in January (Press and Journal).

The Sun, meanwhile, believe that Liverpool want to mould the £3 million, Scotland U21 international into a back-up option for Trent Alexander-Arnold at Anfield.

And, given Ramsay’s admiration for the effervescent England star, such an opportunity may be simply too good to turn down.

“My dad Graham has helped me a lot as well as players like Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker, all those top players,” adds Ramsay, who’s pinpoint deliveries from the right-hand side are certainly reminiscent of Liverpool’s number 66.

“As a full-back, watching Trent and his crosses and his technical ability, if I can get to that level then it would be a bonus.”

“If I can be half the player of him I will be laughing.”
