Wolves are interested in signing £25 million-rated Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini three years after Premier League rivals Aston Villa sold him for just £3.75 million, as reported by Calciomercato

Some context is required here, of course.

Gollini was a million miles from the finished article when he joined a recently relegated Aston Villa side in 2016 during the short-lived and ill-fated Roberto Di Matteo era.

While undeniably talented, the baby-faced 21-year-old lacked the experience or physicality to adapt to life in the most uncompromising of divisions and, after just 20 games between the sticks, Gollini returned to Italy with his tail between his legs.

Will Aston Villa youngster Gollini come to Wolves?

A man once dubbed heir apparent to Gigi Buffon has rebuilt his reputation impressively in Bergamo, however, helping Atalanta qualify for the Champions League in each of the past three seasons.

And, with Gian Piero Gasperini’s side completing the £18 million signing of Juan Musso from Udinese this month, Gollini may be handed a chance to show Aston Villa what they’re missing a few miles down the road at Molineux.

Everton and Tottenham Hotspur have both been linked with Gollini recently.

According to Calciomercato, Wolverhampton Wanderers have expressed interest in the Bologna native too, with Atalanta expected to demand a fee in the region of £25 million.

At this stage, however, the smart money is on Jose Sa arriving in the Black Country instead as Wolves look to find a new number one capable of replacing Roma-bound Rui Patricio.

The Olympiacos ace has been on the verge of a move to England for a number of weeks, with super-agent Jorge Mendes looking to bring another Portuguese player to the West Midlands.

Sa, valued at about £8 million, would be a lot cheaper than Gollini too.
