Fernando Mendoza’s delay in signing his rookie deal with the Las Vegas Raiders is becoming a concern.
The Las Vegas Raiders drafted Indiana University’s top-notch prospect Fernando Mendoza using the No.1 overall pick in the NFL Draft.
Mendoza is expected to one day lead the Raiders to multiple Super Bowls and win titles, but right now, the franchise is unable to convince the 22-year-old to sign his rookie deal.
Fernando Mendoza and Las Vegas Raiders are at a stalemate over a contract bonus
Mendoza’s rookie deal is reportedly worth about $57.2 million, as he’s one of the most touted quarterbacks of this generation.
While the entire contract is guaranteed, this includes about $38.1 million as a signing bonus. This bonus is usually paid over the entirety of the contract, which in Mendoza’s case is four years.
Evidently, it means that the bonus is paid in intervals, but Mendoza’s camp wants the bonus in a lump sum.
This has led to a stalemate between the two sides as it would put the Raiders in a financial slump. As a result, Mendoza remains unsigned despite being drafted by the Raiders.
Usually, signing bonuses are paid in a lump sum, unless the amount is too huge, which seems to be true in Mendoza’s case. After all, $38.1 million is not a small amount by any means.
As of now, neither side seems ready to budge from their position, and with the NFL season nearing, they need to figure out a middle ground sooner rather than later.
