The White House is the busiest it has ever been over the past week amid all the controversy at the 2026 World Cup.

FIFA were heavilty criticized following a controversial refereeing decision during the 2026 World Cup match between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

President Donald Trump filed a direct complaint to FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding the sending-off of Folarin Balogun, claiming that match officials had misjudged an accidental collision.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee subsequently intervened, utilizing a lesser-known clause in the disciplinary code to provisionally suspend Balogun’s one-match ban for a probationary year.

While U.S. officials like Senator Ted Cruz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the reversal, European governing body UEFA strongly condemned FIFA’s decision.

But the issue isn’t going away, with White House official, Andrew Giulani, defending the decision and even diverting things at Keir Starmer.

💭 20 years on from England's World Cup quarter-final exit vs Portugal, what are your memories from the match?

😉 Who can forget that CR7 wink…

Folarin Balogun intervention defended by Andrew Giulani

TalkSPORT quizzed Andrew Giulani on the process behind the incident involving the referee’s decision and the appeal that followed the Folarin Balogun incident.

And it’s fair to say that he doubled down on the match-fixing allegations they pointed to previously from his past, referencing his involvement in a 2024 Brazilian match-fixing investigation.

He was asked:

There were reports here that you, yourself, along with U.S. Soccer, were involved in creating a dossier to help overturn the red card decision. I mean, how strong was that case? What evidence did you use?

Giulani responded:

“Well, look, I was not the one who was ultimately building the case. We did talk with U.S. Soccer.

“I know that there were other discussions that happened within government as well. I think our concern more than anything, was making sure that fair play was achieved on the field. So, for us, we looked at again the past allegations of match fixing with this ref.

“We looked at the fact that this ref was alleged to match fix with irregular red cards, understanding that this was a scenario where there was an irregular red card issued because the process that was used was flawed and never should have been used. That combination ultimately led for involvement.”

Andrew Giulani comments on referee Raphael Claus

The comments didn’t stop there, as Brazilian referee Raphael Claus officiated the match, and was at the center of all the controversy on the field.

He was asked about the referee here.

Andrew, I mean, the man, the chief of all referees, Pierluigi Colina, has defended the referee in question. Do you still think that this referee in question was not fit to be in charge of that game?

His response was:

“Well, look, I would just say, why was the process used where VAR was used to slow down a contact play? We know that that’s not allowed, so he obviously made a very, very big mistake there. Look, I don’t know what his motive was for making that mistake.

“It could have just been human error that happens with referees. But when we saw the past allegations along with that error, it certainly led to certainly questions from our perspective. Yeah.”
