Steve Bruce is a big fan of Jed Wallace but West Bromwich Albion will face competition from Nottingham Forest for Millwall’s Championship talisman, as reported by the Express and Star.

After the Baggies slumped to a 0-0 draw at home to Coventry City on April 23rd – the latest in a long run of lifeless performances from a side enduring their worst campaign since a young man by the name of Ricky Martin was taking the charts by storm – Bruce said what everyone at the Hawthorns was thinking.

“We lack creativity,” the under-fire manager sighed at full-time. “We’ve got no real pace in the top area or in the midfield area. We are a bit samey.”

Now, you certainly couldn’t accuse Wallace of lacking ‘pace’ or ‘creativity’. I

n the last three seasons, Millwall’s long-serving talisman has produced 56 goals or assists at Championship level, 17 of those coming in an impressive 2021/22 campaign for a Lions side who – in stark contrast to West Brom – continue to perform like a side far greater than the sum of their parts.

Is Jed Wallace the solution for West Brom?

Wallace, who once spent a brief spell at West Brom’s Midland neighbours Wolverhampton Wanderers, will be a free-agent in July. Bruce is a ‘big fan’, though West Brom could face competition from a Nottingham Forest side who may be in a position to offer Premier League football in 2022/23.

28-year-old Wallace, a £10 million target for Aston Villa a couple of seasons back, was the subject of three bids from an upwardly-mobile Forest side in the January transfer window.

Millwall successfully warded off any lingering interest, however, after demanding a staggering £9 million for a man who would become a free-agent a couple of months later (Express).

Should Wallace fire Millwall into the play-offs – and potentially into the Premier League – then their refusal to cash in will most certainly have been justified.

“Jed is instrumental in everything we achieve,” Millwall boss Gary Rowett once said of Wallace. “His stats are unbelievable.”

West Brom are keen on another out-of-contract Championship star – Reading’s John Swift – with Derby County captain Tom Lawrence another potential addition.
