Gary Neville has been left stunned on Twitter by the potential transfer fee Chelsea could pay Benfica for Liverpool target Enzo Fernandez.

The Manchester United legend added the possible £112 million fee that is being put on the table by Todd Boehly’s Chelsea is ‘one hell of a price’ even if the Argentina World Cup winner is a ‘very good player’.

After winning the Young Player of the Tournament at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Fernandez’s stock has gone through the roof, including Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool expressing interest in the player.

Given how far Chelsea are seemingly going to push the boat out, from a financial perspective, for the player, then it’s not a surprise that the Reds are possibly going to miss out on his signature.

It could be argued that those on Merseyside need Fernandez more than any of their rivals around them because of their midfield issues.

But he could be lining up for an already-expensively assembled Chelsea side this month, as Neville was surprised by the fee involved.

LIVERPOOL AND CHELSEA IN THE JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW

Before a ball was kicked this season, both clubs would have wanted to try and challenge the all-dominant Manchester City for the Premier League title.

If they had been told that it would be Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal leading the charge post-Christmas, then they would have been more upbeat.

Instead, there have been issues left, right and centre for the London and Merseyside duo. The summer transfer window seemingly made things worse for Chelsea and they will be hoping for a change in fortune this month.

Whereas Liverpool need that refreshment across their squad if they want to beat teams like Chelsea to Champions League football.
