Stevie Nicol has stated that Liverpool’s new signing Cody Gakpo is ‘hot property’ and he cost a lot less than the ‘crazy’ fee Chelsea are seemingly going to pay for Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

The Liverpool legend questioned ‘what’s wrong with Chelsea?’, as he feels they are going to ‘waste’ £120 million on signing Argentina’s World Cup winner during the January transfer market.

As soon as Fernandez helped Argentina lift the World Cup, the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea came flooding in wanting to sign the 21-year-old.

Of course, from Benfica’s perspective, they don’t want to sell one of their key players, but the financial might of the Premier League talks.

And in the case of Fernandez, they might have no choice but to part ways with him this month.

But former Liverpool defender Stevie Nicol certainly isn’t impressed, as he compared the possible deal to Gakpo’s recent arrival on Merseyside, as he told ESPN.

“Am I the only person that’s thinking ‘what’s wrong with Chelsea?’” said Nicol. “You are going to spend £120 million on Fernandez? Am I the only person thinking that? £120 million?!

“He’s a hot property!? Gakpo’s a hot property. Liverpool got him for £37 million and he scores goals. I am sorry, Fernandez had a great World Cup and he’s a good player.

“But £120 million? When your problems and struggles are going forward – I think they have everything upside down. You are going to waste £120 million. Their problems are going forward and Fernandez is going to do nothing for you going forward.

CHELSEA’S PLANNING HAS TO BE QUESTIONED

In the summer, with new owner Todd Boehly in the Chelsea hotseat, the club spent well over £200 million.

They didn’t help themselves by sacking the manager that brought all those players in, with attacking issues being a big problem for Thomas Tuchel, at the time.

Fast forward to the present and Graham Potter, among many issues, lacks that striker or goalscorer.

But Chelsea continue to spend big on defensive players or defensive-minded players, which has to be questioned because it seems as though they are just throwing money at the market to try and make a few statements.
