Tottenham Hotspur are in the market for a new defender this summer and there is one target they should prioritise.
Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur have been busy in the summer transfer window as the Lilywhites gear up for a key season as they aim to break back into the Champions League places.
Tottenham completed the signing of Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray earlier this month, and have also added promising Swedish star Lucas Bergvall, with the midfielder being previously linked with a move to Spanish giants FC Barcelona.
A move for a striker may well be the next priority but if the Lilywhites are to improve next season, a new defender also be required for additional depth.

Spurs have to move for Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah
A defender who should be targeted by Spurs is Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah, whose future at Stamford Bridge is certainly up in the air this summer.
HITC has reported that Chelsea are keen to sell Chalobah and are also prepared to omit the English defender from the Premier League squad, so he would not be eligible for the club’s league campaign.
It is our understanding that over half of the club’s in the Premier League have asked about the defender but Chalobah’s desire to remain at Stamford Bridge meant this interest was not taken further.
However, Chalobah is now aware that he will have to leave this summer and Tottenham should be right at the front of the queue to take the defender off of Chelsea’s hands.
Spurs have to move for defender compared to Virgil Van Dijk
HITC had reported back in May that Tottenham were keen on doing a double deal with Chelsea for Chalobah and midfielder Conor Gallagher.
It is unclear whether this remains the case but adding a profile like Chalobah to Spurs’ defence could be a brilliant move.
With Chelsea seemingly so keen on moving on the Englishman, perhaps a deal could be done at the £25 million mark for a player who can play in multiple positions.
Ian Wright was a big fan of Chalobah when he broke through at Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel.
“Watching him against Arsenal [in pre-season] I was thinking, ‘wow, maybe it’s just a pre-season friendly he looks good,” Wright said on Wrighty’s House podcast.
“I watched him against Villarreal [in the Super Cup] and I thought, ‘my god he’s really good’.
“You know what he reminded me of, not the same player, not the same stature, but the way Virgil Van Dijk when he played for Celtic, people said he’s just taking liberties just because he’s good and not in the same standard [as others].”
Whilst it would be a controversial deal, it could be a very smart one for Postecoglou to consider.
Chalobah knows the Premier League and would be a key defender to mix in with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Radu Dragusin, completing their set of central defensive options.
