What a difference a goal makes.

After 14 games without finding the target, Timo Werner was back on the scoresheet against Newcastle and now finds himself being lauded once again.

Having arrived from RB Leipzig for £47.5m with a significant reputation, the 24-year-old has struggled in front of goal this season, with just nine goals in 31 appearances for Chelsea prior to Monday night.

He showed supporters exactly what he’s capable of against Steve Bruce’s men, however, with an excellent assist for Olivier Giroud’s opener followed by a goal of his own eight minutes later.

Jamie Carragher was impressed by the German’s performance, and suggested that his movement was reminiscent of Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.

Although Werner may not be at the Frenchman’s level quite yet in terms of his impact in English football, his latest display will have given Tuchel confidence as Chelsea continue their push for a Champions League place.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the match, former Liverpool defender Carragher said: “I want to look at his touch map, because when he came into England, you were asking what sort of position he was and what position does he play in a formation.

“Frank (Lampard) used him on the wide left and through the middle.

“It was really interesting how he was used tonight; it was almost a mixture of both.

“You see his touch map and you think of Werner from Leipzig, he was almost in that Thierry Henry role – I’m obviously not linking him to Henry in terms of ability just yet – but that position just on the inside left, he wants to make runs there, he wants to get the ball there.”

Speaking on Sky Sports after his impressive performance, Werner said: “For a striker, it’s much worse when you don’t come into the situation and you don’t have chances. I had a lot of chances and I missed them.

“Today, my team brought me a lot of situations where I could score and that’s the important thing for me.”
