Could this be the turning point for Timo Werner?

One of the most highly-rated attackers in the world has failed to live up to expectations since arriving at Stamford Bridge in the summer, but on Monday night he showed Chelsea fans what he’s capable of.

Having already earned plaudits for an excellent assist after 31 minutes, the man who signed a deal reportedly worth £170,000 per week upon leaving RB Leipzig scored his first Premier League goals since November eight minutes later.

It finished 2-0, and it was Werner’s name on the lips of supporters following their side’s fifth successive victory.

The win lifts Chelsea into fourth place, above West Ham on goal difference and ahead of champions Liverpool by two points.

It means Thomas Tuchel remains unbeaten in six matches since taking over from Frank Lampard.

Tuchel’s countryman Werner could be a major part of their push for a Champions League place, and these supporters have singled the 24-year-old out for praise.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the match, Werner said: “I think as a striker, you always want to score.

“The last month I was not happy about not scoring, but it’s a team sport and when we win, everything is good. When I help my team with assists, winning penalties and now with scoring, I’m happy.

“For a striker, it’s much worse when you don’t come into the situation and you don’t have chances. I had a lot of chances and I missed them. Today, my team brought me a lot of situations where I could score and that’s the important thing for me.”

Chelsea are next in action on Saturday when they face Southampton at St Mary’s.
