Well, Tottenham Hotspur were definitely on the right track in wanting to sign Sofyan Amrabat at one point.

In January of this year, the Morocco international was heavily linked with a surprise transfer to Spurs.

Calciomercato claimed, in fact, that Amrabat was only one step away from signing for Antonio Conte’s side last winter.

Alfredo Pedulla then reported that Tottenham had scrapped their plans to bring the 26-year-old to North London.

We’ll never know if he would’ve succeeded at the Lilywhites but, one thing we do know is that he’s certainly an excellent player.

Earlier today, he played 90 minutes in helping Morocco record another World Cup shock by beating Belgium 2-0.

Okay so it wasn’t as surprising as Saudi Arabia beating Argentina, but the Belgians have a ridiculous squad on paper and therefore would’ve been major favourites to beat their North African counterparts.

Tottenham won’t be overly disappointed in shelving their plans to sign the Fiorentina midfielder, though.

That’s because they wound up signing Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus instead and the Uruguay international – also at the World Cup – is one of Conte’s best players.

The South American has scored some vital, late goals for the North Londoners this season and although it would’ve been intriguing to see how Amrabat fared in England, nobody at Tottenham would change the fact they signed Bentancur instead.
