The 2026 World Cup kicked off on Sunday, July 19, capping off an entertaining summer of soccer across North America.
This year’s final was held at the New York New Jersey Stadium and saw two of the world’s elite, Spain and Argentina, facing off.
Given that most of the tournament, including the final, was held in the USA, it was not surprising to see President Donald Trump in attendance.
Trump can be a divisive figure, but Spain striker Borja Iglesias has still suggested he will shake his hand after the game.

Speaking prior to Sunday’s showpiece, he said: “I don’t want to go to prison. I hope it happens when we’re all happy, that it passes quickly and I can forget about it.
“I don’t think this is the time to create controversy. People know perfectly well what I think.”
It had already been revealed prior to kick-off that Trump would be among the key figures present after the match to greet players who are receiving their medals.
Whether or not every single player will shake the President’s hand after the game remains to be seen, as it is yet to conclude at the time of writing.
Regardless, Trump is already talking about future World Cups and is keen for America to be named as a host at a future tournament.
But with the hosts of the next two competitions already confirmed, international soccer will not be back in the US until 2038 at the earliest.
