US President Donald Trump has lifted the lid on the plan he has laid out to FIFA about hosting another World Cup tournament in the country.
The second World Cup ever held in the United States (albeit this year’s was co-hosted with Canada and Mexico) comes to a close on Sunday when Spain play Argentina in New Jersey.
FIFA are urging fans to get to the stadium as early as four hours before kick-off due to glitches in the system. How are they so unorganised?!
Though the tournament has not been without its controversy, few would doubt that all three countries have served as excellent hosts.
Quite how much one can read into FIFA president Gianni Infantino describing the 2026 World Cup as the “greatest human, social and cultural event that mankind has ever witnessed and seen” is up for debate, but both he and Trump are pleased.
So much so, in fact, that Trump wants another tournament as soon as possible.
Trump wants FIFA to announce the US as World Cup hosts ASAP
Asked about when the World Cup might return to US soil by Fox Sports, Trump said: “I had a great idea for Gianni. I said you have to do two countries. So announce us again next time and announce another country after that. It’ll take out some of the anger and the shock. I think it’s a great idea.”
Indeed, it seems Trump is ready for the US to host what would be a third World Cup, with the country having previously hosted the 1994 edition.
He is of the view that should FIFA announce another future host at the same time as potentially confirming the US will get another chance, it will stop onlookers calling for more countries to be considered.
The locations for the next two World Cups are already set. The 2030 tournament in four years’ time will be held across Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
One game, however, will be held in each of Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay to celebrate the tournament’s 100th anniversary.

After that, the 2034 World Cup will be held in Saudi Arabia.
Andrew Giuliani, who is executive director of the White House’s World Cup task force, has previously confirmed that the US is interested in hosting the 2038 tournament. It is not clear where Mexico and Canada feature in that idea, if at all.
That is the next tournament that can be bid for, although there will surely be rival interest from across the globe.
