Vincent Janssen has been linked with a move away from Tottenham Hotspur, so should the man who defended him be on Spurs’ radar?
Following the difficult start that Vincent Janssen endured after making his move to Tottenham last summer, international teammate Bas Dost leapt to the Dutchman’s defence and insisted that he would come good at White Hart Lane (via De Telegraaf).
But with the 22-year-old adding just three goals to his tally since Dost backed him for success, Mauricio Pochettino would be forgiven for being very interested in the news that Galatasaray and Wolfsburg want to sign Janssen this summer one year after he arrived for around £18 million (via London Evening Standard).
And if he does decide to cut his losses on Janssen and let him move on, then Dost should be on the list of names under consideration to replace him at Spurs.
Tottenham’s Vincent Janssen
The 27-year-old has been brilliant in the Portuguese top flight this term, incredibly scoring 16 in just 17 games for Sporting Lisbon.
While sceptics may point to Janssen’s record for AZ Alkmaar before his move to the Premier League and suggest that an impressive strike-rate elsewhere does not guarantee success in England – he had scored 27 in 34 Eredivisie games for the club – Dost’s season in Portugal is not an anomaly, and it must be noted that he has proved himself in several countries.
The Netherlands international scored 45 in 66 league games for Heerenveen before earning a move to Wolfsburg, one of the teams now chasing Janssen.
Bas Dost
From his four years in the Bundesliga, he scored 36 in 85 games and was key part of the side that finished the 2014-15 season second in the league behind Bayern Munich and won the German Cup.
What was notable about that campaign is that it was the one that saw his partnership with Kevin De Bruyne flourish. And while the Belgian will take much of the credit for Dost’s goals return, it could also be argued that without Dost’s prowess in front of goal, De Bruyne’s assists tally would not have been as impressive either.
Poll: Who will be Chelsea’s nearest challengers in Premier League title race this season?
And with Tottenham boasting a tremendous amount of creativity going forward, there is no reason why he cannot rediscover that form or emulate the form that he is showing in Portugal currently and provide the quality cover to Harry Kane that Spurs had hoped Janssen would bring.
