Ange Postecoglou has helped transform Tottenham following his move to the club last summer.

Tottenham were in a mess when he first joined 12 months ago, including the club’s style of play being all over the place.

On top of that, Spurs sold Harry Kane days before the new campaign and fans were worried about what was coming their way.

Not only did Postecoglou transform the style of play, but he also made some very strong calls in the transfer market.

There aren’t many teams who play in the manner in which Tottenham do, it’s a dream for their attacking players and it can be a nightmare for the defenders.

That’s why it’s crucial the players have a certain set of skills and one quality, in particular, is needed and that’s pace.

Micky van de Ven has pure pace and is one of the quickest players in the Premier League, never mind one of the fastest defenders.

Sebastien Bassong labelled the flying Dutchman as ‘top, top-notch’ and how he speaks highly of him to other people.

The former Premier League defender added that van de Ven is also the ‘perfect’ player for Postecoglou, as he told talkSPORT (27/08/24 at 9:00 am).

Micky van de Ven’s qualities

“He is top, top-notch,” said Bassong. “Honestly, from last season, I couldn’t praise him enough.

“Sometimes I go to the game or watch the game, people keep asking me ‘one defender in the league’. I say van de Ven. For me, he is the overall player. He’s quick, strong and good on the ball. He takes risks. Sometimes he oversteps. When he is in trouble, he isn’t panicking. And he is so calm on the ball.

“So, you know, even when he is in a one-v-one situation, he is going to do the job. He is the perfect player.”

Micky van de Ven staying fit

Tottenham’s season was derailed when van de Ven got injured in 2023/24, with James Maddison also going off during that now-unforgettable game against Cardiff.

You sense that if Spurs want to have a successful season, then they need their two centre-backs – van de Ven and Cristian Romero – to remain fit.

It’s a big ask because of the amount of recovery runs the two make and the fact that they will be playing in Europe this term.

That’s why Spurs fans will be hoping Levy backs the team further in the market and brings in a much-needed centre-back for depth before the window slams shut on Friday.
