Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to sign a player – and it could benefit Arsenal in a major way.
According to Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Spurs are on the brink of sealing a season-long loan arrangement to bring Clement Lenglet to North London.
Tottenham have been chasing a central defender all summer long and it looks like the Frenchman is who they’re settling for.
And this could, in theory, allow Arsenal the freedom to get one of their own targets.
The Gunners are heavily linked with a move to sign Lisandro Martinez of Ajax – and are really ‘pushing‘ for it, claims Romano.
But with the Argentine defender also a rumoured target of Tottenham and Manchester United [90 Min], it’s a difficult pursuit for Mikel Arteta and Edu.
Their North London rivals represent a genuine threat to Arsenal on the basis that they have something that Arteta’s side do not – Champions League football.
However, if the Lilywhites really are set to sign Lenglet – who, like Martinez, is a centre-back – then it would suggest that Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici aren’t seriously pursuing the South American.
And if a serious outfit like Spurs are out of the equation, well then that’s one big horse out of the race.
Of course, Arsenal aren’t guaranteed to sign Martinez because, as mentioned, Manchester United is still Manchester United at the end of the day.
But Romano’s development about Lenglet could definitely be considered good news because Arteta’s side are that bit closer to getting him, if their North London rivals aren’t interested.
