Manchester City have a plan in place to loan out Sergio Gomez if they sign the Spanish defender this summer, with Manchester United also reportedly interested in the 21-year-old.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Premier League champions have held internal discussions with sister club Girona FC for a potential loan move for Gomez should City sign the R.S.C. Anderlecht fullback in the coming days, with talks ongoing with the Belgian giants.

Gomez was originally thought to be City’s backup option to Marc Cucurella as the Manchester side dropped out of the race for the £50m Brighton & Hove Albion star, however, it now looks like Pep Guardiola and his team are still looking for an alternative for the Spaniard in the market for next season.

And Gomez could have been that player, though following this update from Romano, the former Borussia Dortmund star now appears to be a project for the future, though the youngster could be an exciting signing, especially if City beat Manchester rivals United to the player’s signature.

Erik Ten Hag has been linked with a move for Gomez this summer, with Arsenal and Leeds United also reportedly keen on signing the FC Barcelona academy graduate, however, it is City who currently leads the race to secure the defender this window.

Indeed, after an incredible year with Anderlecht, it makes sense why interest in Gomez is so high and why City are pushing hard to sign the defender, however, their plan to loan out the left-back could be an ill-guided one, with the 21-year-old arguably already capable of playing in the Premier League as a backup option for Guardiola’s side.

Backup for Joao Cancelo and a natural left-back is a key signing for City this summer, and whilst there is logic to why the club would want to loan out the defender for the year to Girona, Gomez is seemingly ready for the next step up in his career, that being a squad member for a Premier League side.

After all, Gomez absolutely dominated the Jupiler League with Anderlecht last season, and whilst La Liga would be a good league to develop his game, the youngster is ready for minutes in the Premier League, with a need for a player of his abilities also very clear in City’s squad.
