Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon is reportedly set to stay with the north London side despite being banished from the squad in pre-season and recent talks with Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest.

According to AS, the Spanish left-back is set to stay with Tottenham this summer following multiple reports that Spurs were looking to offload the former Real Madrid star, with Forest currently in talks to reportedly sign Reguilon for the season on loan just weeks after the defender was omitted from Conte’s pre-season squad.

The Italian manager has made a point of shipping off players who don’t fit into the club’s future plans out on loan, with Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele both leaving north London in recent weeks with the likes of Harry Winks and Bryan Gil also set to reportedly leave before the closure of the transfer window next Thursday.

Reguilon also fits into this category, however, the 25-year-old fullback now looks set to remain with Tottenham for the season despite the recent arrival of Ivan Perisic and the resurgence of Ryan Sessegnon, two quality players who will likely always start ahead of the Spaniard out in the left-wingback position.

Indeed, the decision for the fullback to stay with Tottenham is an unusual one, to say the least, especially with clubs such as Forest interested in signing Reguilon for the year, where the fullback could play regular football and entice transfer interest from teams in 2023.

However, should this report be true, it is likely that Reguilon will spend the majority of the next few months on the bench, with Tottenham potentially looking to sell the defender yet again in January once the window is open again for business.

Reguilon staying at Tottenham is a baffling decision

As mentioned, the decision for Reguilon to stay at Tottenham is one that will raise many eyebrows, especially with clubs already in talks to sign the fullback on loan, and should the Spaniard actually remain in north London, it will be up there with one of the strangest choices a top Premier League side has made this summer.

After all, Reguilon needs to be playing regular football despite his lacklustre spell with Tottenham over the past two years, and signing for a club like Forest on loan will be much more beneficial for everyone than the defender staying in the English capital and wasting everyone’s time and money doing nothing on the bench.
