Report: Newcastle looking at player that once flopped under Conte after £60m deal

Newcastle United have joined the race to sign former Chelsea striker, Alvaro Morata from Atletico Madrid, according to a report.

COULD NEWCASTLE SIGN MORATA AFTER CHELSEA STRUGGLES?

Back in 2017, when Antonio Conte was in charge of Chelsea, they paid a then-record fee of £60 million for the Spain international (BBC Sport). 

Conte, who is now doing wonders at Tottenham and won the Premier League title at Stamford Bridge, was in charge of the club at the time.

The Italian had a very public falling out with Diego Costa and decided to replace the all-action Brazilian-born star with Morata.

It’s fair to say that things didn’t go well for the player and it was a decision Chelsea would regret – he scored 16 goals in 47 Premier League games.

To put that into context, Callum Wilson, who was injured for large parts of this season for Newcastle, scored half of those goals from his 18 league games this term. 

Now, Italian outlet, CalcioMercato, have claimed that Newcastle United, along with, Barcelona and Arsenal are looking at Morata’s talents.

Given that the 29-year-old has already flopped on English soil before, it wouldn’t be a surprise if supporters of those clubs simply don’t want to entertain the idea of signing him.

Morata was on-loan at Juventus this season, he scored nine Serie A goals and 12 from 48 in all competitions.

Juve ended the season fourth in the Serie A table and failed to win a trophy for the first time in ten years, so it’s not like Morata has put on a song for the old lady to sing. 

Either way, those at St James’ Park might be looking at Morata’s talents, but at the end of the day, they are better off looking elsewhere for players of proven quality.
