Newcastle United are reportedly haggling over a loan fee for Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend.

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle United are haggling over a loan fee for Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend, but are happy to pay his £13million release clause in the summer.

The Magpies may have been humiliated in the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 defeat at Oxford United, but they remain on course for promotion to the Premier League.

Rafael Benitez’s men sit second in the Championship table, six points clear of third place and just two points behind league leaders Brighton and Hove Albion – yet fans are a little frustrated that Benitez hasn’t been able to bring in a new signing this month.

We’re now into the final day of the transfer window, and Sky Sports report that Newcastle remain keen on bringing winger Andros Townsend back to the club, just six months after selling him to Crystal Palace.

It’s stated that, whilst Newcastle are happy to pay Townsend’s release clause of £13million over the summer should they win promotion to the Premier League, the two clubs are haggling over a loan fee.

Palace want £2million just for Newcastle to take Townsend on loan until the end of the season, and the Magpies may not be quite so keen, given that the total deal would then cost more than what they sold the winger for last summer.

Townsend impressed during his six months with Newcastle, as the 25-year-old wide man hit four goals and two assists in 13 appearances before the Magpies suffered relegation to the Championship, meaning it’s no great surprise that Benitez wants him back at St. James’ Park.

The report adds that Newcastle defender Chancel Mbemba could head the other way, but is more likely to be involved in a separate deal as the January transfer window heads into its final few hours.
